After Stay and Hotel Burned- 1910s Antique Photograph- Burnt Ruins- Fire Disaster- Nov. 29, 1912- Real Photo Postcard- NOKO RPPC

(5 1/2 x 3 1/2 In) This is an original antique NOKO paper real photo postcard from the 1910s. It shows a group of Edwardian men posing solemnly with the remains of their burned out hotel. Nothing but smoldering rubble remains. Taken at a time when everything was flammable and fire safety beyond leaving a burning building was almost non existent, this was not an uncommon event.

It is no wonder that hotels of the time would advertise themselves as “Fire-Proof”. Although that didn’t stop supposedly fire-proof hotels from burning down. In fact the term “Fireproof” has since been discontinued by the National Board of Fire Underwriters. The Palmer House of Chicago, completed in 1875 was the first hotel built and advertised to be fireproof after the original burned to the ground in the Great Chicago Fire, 1871.

I wish I knew what hotel this used to be but the only clue is a small, handwritten notation on the back, “After Stay and Hotel Burned- Nov. 29, 1912”.

The photograph is in EXCELLENT condition, minor wear at the edges.
