That's Pa, Know Him By His Big Eye- 1800s Antique Trade Card- Col. Ruth Goshen, Giant- Victorian Humor- Chickens- Chicago, IL

$9.50

(2 3/4 x 4 1/4 In) This is an original antique Victorian trade card from the 1800s. The front shows a rather dark comic of a pair of chickens strolling past a butcher's counter, "That's Pa, I know him by his big eye".  The back advertises "Col. Routh Goshen, Our Giant" and "F. M. Atwood, Clothier".

"COL. ROUTH GOSHEN- Our Giant, was born in Jerusalem of Turkish parents, and is now 48 years of age. His father was a coffee planter, and was three inches shorter than the Colonel's present height; he died at the age of 91 years. The mother, still living, is about as tall as this, her youngest son. Her family consisted of 9 sons and 5 daughters, all remarkably large people when they attained full growth. -- In fact they have been a race of giants as far back as they know anything about their ancestors. The Colonel's present height is nearly 8 feet, and his weight about 600 pounds. He was for about 20 years engaged with P. T. Barnum, the great showman, and, having wearied of the confinement of show business, has engaged with us to take charge of out outside advertising, and to make known to the people of Chicago and the North-West the inducements offered by F.M. ATWOOD, The C.O.D. CLOTHIER AND TAILOR AT Nos. 104 & 106 Madison St., Chicago. Where each purchaser gets a LEGAL GUARANTEE CERTIFICATE, which unreservedly warrants the prices as low as are named anywhere in the West for equally good merchandise, and the statements as made in the transaction. NOTICE. Every customer buying here $12 worth of clothing or more, gets a WATERBURY Stem Winding Nickel Watch, a Good Timekeeper or an equivalent cash Discount."

The trade card is in VERY GOOD condition, wear at the edges, blunted corner tips, a few small stains.
